Concussion Management in Oakville
Holistic concussion and post-concussion recovery with a naturopathic doctor certified in Complete Concussion Management
Are you still dealing with the after-effects of a concussion — headaches, brain fog, dizziness, fatigue, or trouble concentrating weeks or months after your injury? You don't have to just wait it out. As a naturopathic doctor in Oakville certified in Complete Concussion Management, I help patients recover with a structured, whole-body approach.
Concussions are more common than people think
Concussions can happen at any age — playing sports like rugby, soccer, or hockey, in a car accident, or from a simple fall (which is how it happened to me). A concussion can affect the whole body, with symptoms such as headache, confusion, cognitive and concentration issues, memory loss, hypersensitivity to light and sound, and anxiety, depression, or irritability.
There's no single medical test that diagnoses a concussion. Because it's a functional injury rather than a structural one, CT scans and MRIs usually come back normal (unless there's a skull fracture or brain bleed). Instead, concussion is diagnosed through symptoms, medical history, and neurological and cognitive testing.
When symptoms don't go away: Post-Concussion Syndrome
A concussion can heal on its own in about 30 days — but 30–40% become chronic when they aren't treated promptly and properly by a complete concussion management practitioner. When symptoms linger, it's called Post-Concussion Syndrome (PCS). There are five common drivers of long-lasting symptoms, and proper care looks at each one:
Blood flow and inflammation — I use live blood analysis to assess blood flow and inflammation, which is key to supporting the brain's recovery.
Metabolic, hormonal, and inflammatory factors
Visual and vestibular (inner ear) issues
Neck issues from whiplash — almost always present alongside concussion
Psychological effects — including depression and anxiety
Why early, proper treatment matters
When you go to the emergency room or your family doctor, you're often told to go home and rest for a long time. But recent research shows that after the first 48 hours of rest, it's important to begin proper treatment to support a full recovery. It also matters because a history of concussion makes you 3–6 times more likely to experience another one — unless it's treated properly and promptly.
Why the neck matters in concussion recovery
A head injury is rarely just a brain injury. Whiplash and neck dysfunction are almost always present alongside concussion, and a weakened or unstable neck can keep symptoms going — feeding headaches, dizziness, and balance and coordination problems. That's why restoring neck function is an essential part of my protocol.
The TopSpin360 —
My recent addition to my concussion protocol is the TopSpin360 — a helmet-based device that helps train, stabilize, and strengthen the neck, which is so important in recovery from whiplash and concussion. The device uses a spinning weight that prompts the neck muscles to engage and stabilize the head through multiple planes of motion. Beyond concussion and whiplash recovery, it can also support headaches, dizziness, balance, coordination, and neck pain.
What concussion treatment looks like at my Oakville practice
As a naturopathic doctor certified in Complete Concussion Management, I take a holistic approach that uses multiple modalities to support recovery and help prevent PCS and future concussions:
Brain-recovery diet to calm inflammation
Targeted supplement selection
Lifestyle changes
Gradual, guided exposure to the activities and triggers that bring on symptoms
Gut-health support — because of the brain–gut connection, addressing systemic inflammation means caring for the gut as well
Physical and mind-body therapies — including patient education, mindfulness, breathing exercises, and acupuncture when needed, alongside herbal and homeopathic support
This is a personal focus and passion of mine. Having recovered from two concussions myself, I know how it feels — and how much the right care can change the path
